“[H]e chose us in him before the foundation[i] of the world….” (Eph. 1:4) God foresaw and foreknew us and had plans for us from the beginning.

Your eyes saw my unformed substance;

in your book were written, every one of them,

the days that were formed for me,

when as yet there was none of them. (Ps. 139:16)

God has brought you to this place; or more accurately, God foreknew you in this place. Whether you feel like you have been following God, God has been leading you, or you are just wandering in the wilderness, you are where God knew you would be from before the creation of the world when God chose you.

We think in terms of home and destination, but the fact is that we are on a journey. We are not home, and our destination is not a place that we can get to on our own.

Our Father

“Our Father…” (Matt. 6:9) begins the only prayer that Jesus taught.  God the Father, the maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen, the God who exists before and beyond time and space Continue reading “Our Father”

A Word to the Wise

It is true that a higher percentage of “smart” people are not believers compared to people of lesser intelligence. The difference, though, has nothing to do with intelligence.

“Not many wise….” (1 Cor. 1:26) Paul observed that not many wise people (as viewed from the perspective of society) were followers of Jesus Christ in his day.  Nothing much has changed since then. So, here is a word to the wise. Continue reading “A Word to the Wise”

My Journey

Stepping out of that myopic existence I began to get an inkling that there existed a world of truth that I wanted to encounter, and so I set off.

It’s time for a little update, not much, but I am no longer new to blogging. I have been at it a few years. Not that I have gained any particular stature. I simply can’t claim to be new at it. I still write as part of my profession, but blogging is more interesting. Blogging is my way of sharpening ideas and fleshing them out. It’s a journey, and I know I don’t always “get it right”, but I take it seriously.

I have been on a journey for truth since I emerged from the haze and confusion of adolescence, much of it self-induced. Stepping out of that myopic existence I began to get an inkling that a world of truth lay in front of me to encounter, and so I set off. I didn’t realize, then, how much faith is required to seek truth.

When Christians Fail Us (God Does Not Fail)

000006_IMG_0069

Though every man be a liar, yet God is true.

I can not count how many times I have heard someone say that they would go to church but for the Church, or would be a Christian but for Christians. While that sentiment may be a legitimate indictment on the state of the Church and the faithlessness of Christians (or not), what should we really expect? We have all sinned and fallen short. There is no one righteous, not even one!

That people are people, however, has no bearing whatsoever on God.

We trust in our churches.

We trust that the nursery will tenderly care for our babies.

We trust that the Sunday School will lovingly teach our children about God.

We trust that our teenagers won’t be bullied in youth group.
